Burgham Race Night – A Sure-Fire Winner!

The Burgham Social Committee certainly pulled off another great event in mid-October with a fabulous Race Night!

It was an evening that saw golf club members and housing residents come together — and in many cases, have their hard-earned cash whisked away betting on some very underwhelming horses. Of course, there were winners too, who took great delight in returning to the Bookies’ Tote Table to claim their well-earned winnings!

Entertainment came courtesy of Gents’ Captain Simon Watson, whose witty introduction set the tone for the night, followed by a hilarious spoof round of Play Your Cards Right, which had everyone in stitches.

The Club team once again worked tirelessly throughout the evening, serving drinks and food and keeping everyone in great spirits. But the real credit must go to Steve and Annette Johnson for the huge amount of effort they put into making it such a brilliant night.

The Social Committee has plenty more in store, including a Christmas Wreath-Making Workshop at the end of November — and more great events to follow. Watch this space — and remember, when it comes to Burgham nights out, it’s always worth backing the favourites!

Finlay Trophy Season Concludes with a Thrilling Final Round

The Ladies Section competition season drew to a close in mid-October with the final round of the Finlay Trophy. This season-long competition sees players accumulate points based on their finishing positions in each Finlay/Strokeplay round.

After a wonderful summer of mostly dry and favourable conditions, the scoring throughout the Trophy has been excellent. The final round was played on a cool but windless day, which again produced some impressive scores.

Winner on the day was Christine Hall (right) with a fabulous net 75, including four excellent gross pars. Christine narrowly edged out Dot Lowes, who finished with a net 76, while Mandy Scott claimed third place with a net 77.

The total points for the Trophy were also calculated, and the winner of the overall Finlay Trophy was Gill Smith (left) with 49 points, just ahead of Christine Hall on 46 points — a very closely fought contest!

Looking ahead, the Ladies are enjoying a Fun Day at Morpeth Golf Centre on 25th October before moving into Winter League from 1st November. Winter League consists of 9 holes on Saturdays — just turn up by 9:30 a.m, put your ball in the bag, and play. All handicaps are very welcome!

New Ladies Celebrate a Fantastic End-of-Season Texas Scramble!

Our Get into Golf and Academy groups enjoyed a brilliant end-of-season Texas Scramble in mid-October, rounding off a year of great progress, friendship, and fun on the course.

Throughout the year, both groups have been honing their skills through a mix of individual practice, sessions with Buddies, and group lessons with Professional Heather Smith. This final competition provided the perfect opportunity to put everything into action — playing a full nine holes and showing off the techniques learned during the season.

There were shouts of delight as putts dropped, plenty of laughter, and the occasional “oh no!” of frustration — but that’s golf as we all know!

The winners on the day are below, but every one of the 20 ladies who took part had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

1st Place: Janet McDonald, Lynne Jackson and Katharine Hillier (Gross 49 - Net 10.6)
2nd Place: Karen Marshall, Jane Parker and Helen McBay (Gross 50 - Net 18.8)
3rd Place: Joy Spreadbury, Merilyn Cockburn and Susan Randall (Gross 45 - Net 19.9)

Nearest the Pin was Karen Marshall

Gill Smith, one of the group coordinators, summed it up perfectly:

“The Buddies’ support has been amazing throughout the year, along with Heather Smith’s great lessons. But the real champions are all of you — the ladies who come along to play with a smile, make friends, and keep coming back for more. You’re a wonderful bunch to work with, and we’re really looking forward to seeing you through the winter and into next season.”

A huge well done to everyone involved — it’s been a fantastic year of golf, confidence-building, and camaraderie. Here’s to even more progress and fun in the year ahead!

A Fabulous Day of Golf for Charity Raises Over £2,500 for CRUK (Blyth Committee)

In late September, we were blessed with glorious autumn sunshine and almost no breeze as over 80 golfers gathered to take part in a thrilling Texas Scramble challenge. The day wasn't about competition but about coming together for a cause that touches us all — supporting Cancer Research UK.

We all know someone, whether personally or through family and friends, who has been affected by cancer, making the day carry even greater significance. It was a true celebration of community spirit, generosity, and solidarity.

Top Performers on the Course

While  the event focused on charity, the golfing was fabulous, with some impressive play on display. Congratulations to the following teams for their excellent performances:

1st Place: J Calder, R Houlison, S Warwick, and J Hatch (Morpeth)
2nd Place: M Scott, C Scott, H Rutter, and J Nicholls (Burgham)
3rd Place: J Turnbull, B Peaty, A James, and G Parry (Morpeth)

In addition to the team prizes, we also recognized individual achievements:

Nearest the Pins: K McReevy and M Anderson
Longest Drives: Ami Ewan and Dan Ewan

  • The members who ran the raffle and contributed beautiful flowers
  • All the donors who provided prizes
  • The Blyth Committee Team for all their hard work in obtaining prizes and supporting the day itself
  • The greenkeeping team for all their work preparing the course
  • And of course, to all those who participated and generously gave their time and donations

Thanks to all your efforts, we are proud to announce that over £2,500 was raised for the Blyth Committee of Cancer Research UK.

Your generosity has made a real difference.
