Lindsey wins the '2s'

In late September, the Burgham Ladies competed for the 2s Salver, an 18-hole competition open to those who had managed to score a “2” earlier in the season. Conditions couldn’t have been better for golf — a calm, autumnal day with light winds and a touch of sunshine set the scene for some excellent play from the top three of the day.

In third place, Cora Gray produced some fabulous golf, particularly on the par 3s, where she finished net two under for those tricky little holes. Second place went to Sam Allen, returning from Northumberland Ladies duty, who put together a lovely net 77, including 10 gross pars.

But it was Lindsey Bruce who edged ahead to take first place with a net 76, thanks to a particularly strong back nine. Congratulations to Lindsey and to all the ladies who took part in what was a thoroughly enjoyable competition.

Looking ahead, next weekend is the Captain’s Drive Out. It will be a shame to see our wonderful Lady Captain Mandy Scott’s year come to a close — she’s done an amazing job leading the section. At the same time, we look forward to Vanessa Browning stepping into the role at the AGM and guiding us through the next season.

If you’d like to play in the Captain’s Drive Out, please don’t forget to sign up on the sheet in the bar.

A Fabulous Day of Golf for Charity Raises Over £2,500 for CRUK (Blyth Committee)

In late September, we were blessed with glorious autumn sunshine and almost no breeze as over 80 golfers gathered to take part in a thrilling Texas Scramble challenge. The day wasn't about competition but about coming together for a cause that touches us all — supporting Cancer Research UK.

We all know someone, whether personally or through family and friends, who has been affected by cancer, making the day carry even greater significance. It was a true celebration of community spirit, generosity, and solidarity.

Top Performers on the Course

While  the event focused on charity, the golfing was fabulous, with some impressive play on display. Congratulations to the following teams for their excellent performances:

1st Place: J Calder, R Houlison, S Warwick, and J Hatch (Morpeth)
2nd Place: M Scott, C Scott, H Rutter, and J Nicholls (Burgham)
3rd Place: J Turnbull, B Peaty, A James, and G Parry (Morpeth)

In addition to the team prizes, we also recognized individual achievements:

Nearest the Pins: K McReevy and M Anderson
Longest Drives: Ami Ewan and Dan Ewan

  • The members who ran the raffle and contributed beautiful flowers
  • All the donors who provided prizes
  • The Blyth Committee Team for all their hard work in obtaining prizes and supporting the day itself
  • The greenkeeping team for all their work preparing the course
  • And of course, to all those who participated and generously gave their time and donations

Thanks to all your efforts, we are proud to announce that over £2,500 was raised for the Blyth Committee of Cancer Research UK.

Outstanding Summer of Golf for the Ovenden Juniors

It’s been an outstanding summer for our two junior members Harry and George Ovenden. They have enjoyed success on county, regional and even national stages. Their performances have been nothing short of remarkable, and their dedication and skill continue to make everyone at the club proud.

For Harry, the highlight came when he won both the local and regional qualifying events for the Faldo Futures Series in his age category. That triumph earned him a place in the national final at the iconic Belfry during British Masters week — an unforgettable experience where he not only competed at the highest level but also had the chance to see professionals in action.

He also represented Northumberland under 14s at Wearside in July, competed in both the North of England and Scottish under 14 championships, and crowned his summer by winning the County Junior Summer Open (gross).

George’s season has been equally impressive. Back in May, he teed up for Northumberland under 18s against Yorkshire and halved his singles match with three birdies on the back nine — no mean feat against such a strong county. June brought further success as he won the Burgham Park Junior Open (gross), before continuing his form in July with a superb 71 in the County Championship to qualify for the matchplay stages, ultimately finishing as the under 16 County Champion.

Alongside this, he came runner-up in the Gullane Junior Open with a fantastic 69 and represented Northumberland under 18s in matches against Durham, Cumbria and Lancashire. His progress has now earned him an invitation to the England Regional Squad assessment day on 14th September — a huge honour and recognition of his talent.

There were also some brilliant moments when the boys competed together. On 7th July, George and Harry paired up in the foursomes for Northumberland under 16s against Durham, showing their strong partnership on the course. Both have also proudly represented Burgham men’s teams this season — George in the scratch team and Harry in the handicap team.

Between them, they’ve taken in a packed schedule of junior opens at prestigious venues such as North Berwick and Troon, gaining invaluable experience and showcasing their talent on a wide range of courses.

It has truly been a summer to remember. With county titles, national finals, and now even England recognition, George and Harry have shown what can be achieved through hard work, commitment and passion for the game. Burgham is immensely proud of both boys, and we can’t wait to see what they go on to achieve next season.
